A Simple, Straightforward Notary Process

A little preparation can help your notary appointment go smoothly. Before your appointment, make sure you have the document to be notarized, any required identification, and any additional signers or witnesses, if required.

01 — PREPARE YOUR DOCUMENT

Bring the Complete Document

Bring the document that requires notarization and make sure it is complete and ready for the notarial act. Avoid leaving information blank unless the document specifically requires information to be completed during the signing process.

02 — VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY

Bring Appropriate Identification

Be prepared to provide satisfactory evidence of your identity as required for the notarial act. Depending on the circumstances, this may include a current government-issued identification document or another legally permitted method of identification.

03 — COMPLETE THE NOTARIAL ACT

Sign or Acknowledge as Required

Depending on the notarial act, you may need to sign the document in the notary’s presence, acknowledge a signature previously made, or make a statement or oath as required.

Do not assume every document must be signed in advance—or that every document must wait to be signed in front of the notary. The required procedure depends on the notarial act.

04 — NOTARIZATION

We Complete the Notarial Certificate

After the applicable requirements have been satisfied, the notarial certificate is completed and the notary’s signature and official stamp are applied as required.

Before Your Appointment

If your document requires additional witnesses, special instructions, or another person to participate in the signing, please arrange those requirements before the appointment unless we have specifically agreed to provide additional assistance.

Before Your Notary Appointment

Preparing in advance can help prevent delays or the need to reschedule your appointment. Requirements vary depending on the document and notarial act, but the following checklist is a good place to start.

01 — HAVE YOUR DOCUMENT READY

Bring the Complete Document

Have the document requiring notarization available in its complete form, including all pages that are part of the document.

Complete any information that is yours to provide, but follow any signing or execution instructions you have received regarding when and where signatures should be made.

02 — BRING IDENTIFICATION

Be Prepared to Verify Your Identity

Each signer should be prepared to provide satisfactory evidence of identity when required for the notarial act.

If you are unsure whether the identification you have will be sufficient, contact us before your appointment so we can discuss the applicable identification requirements.

03 — CONFIRM ALL SIGNERS & WITNESSES

Know Who Needs to Participate

Confirm which individuals must sign and whether your document requires witnesses in addition to notarization.

Unless other arrangements have been made in advance, each signer and any required witnesses should be available at the appropriate time for the signing.

Have questions before your appointment?

Contact us before arriving. It is much easier to address a document, identification, witness, or technology question beforehand than after everyone has assembled for the signing.

04 — REVIEW YOUR DOCUMENT BEFOREHAND

Understand What You Are Signing

Review the document before your appointment and make sure you understand its contents and are prepared to sign or acknowledge it voluntarily.

A notary can explain the notarization process but cannot provide legal advice, interpret the document for you, or advise you whether you should sign it.

PLEASE NOTE

A notary must be able to complete the requested notarial act in accordance with applicable requirements. A notarization may need to be declined or postponed if required conditions cannot be satisfied, including circumstances involving identification, signer participation, willingness or awareness, document issues, or an act the notary is not authorized to perform.

Real estate transactions require careful attention to documents, execution requirements, timing, and closing instructions.
